Those of us in the deep South may not know how to drive in snowy, icy conditions but we do know how to enjoy a really good Snow Day!. Our street probably looked like many other streets across the North Georgia as the winter storm brought a nice, white blanket of snow. Our area received somewhere between 5 and 7 inches. Since we live on a cul-de-sac at the bottom of a short but steep hill, the conditions are ripe for a day of winter sports.
Our neighbors across the street began the winter Olympic competition by setting up a snow ramp at the end of their steep driveway. Can you say “airborne”? It was no time before the street was filled with children, pets, parents and cameras. A snow shovel team was on-site to ensure the ramp conditions were ideal. As more brave sledders attempted the steep run and jump, the conditions improved and several competitors were able to really impress the crowds and ESPN camera crews.
As the icy rain and sleet continued to fall through the day, the entire street was transformed into an even larger and more exciting venue. Only the most brave children were daring enough to make the very fast run down that hill! Even as the sun was getting low near the end of the day, the street continued to be filled with the screams of thrilled children and sounds of metal rails or plastic sleds scraping across the now hardening and slippery ice. Guess we will have to wait a bit longer for global warning and that’s ok by everyone on our street!
